A Test of Time: Book Review

I always love it when a writer pushes the envelope.  I have to confess that I have mixed feelings about the push that Cheryl Faye took in A Test of Time.  I give her a lot of credit for doing something daring and exciting…BUT!  I must say that I was taken aback a bit by her approach.

Nicole John and Mark Peterson were the loving couple in A TIME FOR US.  They were an admirable duo, well matched in temperament and style and you just had to root for them all the way. They were so classy and mature and when they committed to one another, you just sighed with delight and knew it was true eternal love.  Well, stay tuned dear reader.

In A TEST OF TIME, the thrill, as B.B. King would sing, is gone.  Despite the fact that they are married, have a love baby daughter and every material thing they could possibly desire, things go awry.  A series of heinous misunderstanding leads to separation, arguments, preparations for divorce, and every other gloomy thing under the sun.

On the one hand, this is how things sometimes happen in real life.  More often than not you see couples who start out with everything in the world going for them ending up in divorce court. Lack of communication, lack of quality time, loss of focus, all these things can lead couples to the precise point where Mark and Nicole were in A TEST OF TIME.

On the other hand, though, these two were so caring with each other so loving and so mature that this was totally unexpected.  It was almost like reading about another couple entirely.  But despite that, Ms Faye does an admirable job of depicting a marriage in trouble.  It wasn’t that I did not believe the turmoil—it was all too realistic at times.  There were times when I wanted to shake Mark, then Nicole, and then the both of them!  You don’t get a strong reaction like that from a novel unless the author has done her job very well.

This book has been exciting a lot of lively discussion, which I think is wonderful.  Nothing is more exciting than the book that makes people sit up and take notice, and A TEST OF TIME is doing just that.  Ultimately, it is always up to the reader.  Grab this book from the bookstore, the library or ‘borrow’ your girlfriend’s copy and dig in.  I guarantee you it will leave you with something to think about, something to talk about and something to savor.  And that in itself is A TEST OF TIME!

Happy Mothers Day

Above photo is of Mom (with braids) and my big sister... Who is also a mother.. I took this picture... It sure was a day to remember!

I'd like to start out by saying that my Mom is the bomb. She sacrificed her life to make sure I had a great one. She deserves the Mom of the Century award. Thank you for raising me up right. You prepared me for my life lesson in becoming a woman. I have gone through some trials and will continue to but you have taught me how to handle myself through those times and that's what is important. Some days I wish it could be as simple as it was in this picture. Whatever trials you were going through you never showed it to me. You always filled my life with LOVE and I love you for that. Thank you. Happy Mother's Day

Where do I begin??

Why is love so complicated? Why are people so persistent to get with you and than months into it their true colors begin to show? I don't think I will ever understand how a mans mind work... I keep over thinking things & its giving me a headache...

I'm upset with a friend of mine because I feel like she's settling, she deserves so much more than she is given... She has the potential to be this amazing woman but because she's afraid of being alone... Its almost like an "This is all I can get so I'll take it" kinda thing. I hate that about her. The thing about it is, he's involved with someone so he can't fully invest all of his time into her, the fact that he has a family isn't bugging me because I truly believe in the phrase "You can't help who you love" and I understand their attraction to one another because this isn't the 1st time around for them, but c'mon son.. There's so much more you can be, why settle? At least keep your options open in the event something better come all, how you gon' put all your eggs in one basket when this man has a family? A live in family at that... *sigh* Here comes the headache again.

I went out last night, Big Ricks was epic but I didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to. The crowd was crazy, the music was great, drinks were on deck but I couldn't bring myself to enjoy it. Saw a few dudes from my past, I don't wanna get into that though.. At least not right now. I think I'll stay off the party scene for a while, I've been out 3times for the month of April alone.. Believe it for not, that's a record.

I'm still trying to get into this new job I have, I worked at the bank for 11months but they let me go as a means to reduce cost. It was sad because I loved my job. It was the ideal job for me & the pay was great too. I fell back from that pretty quickly and found this job as a Chiropractor's Assistance. Basically I do secretarial work. I don't like it to much, mainly because I hate dealing with customers.. Its never been my thing. The pay sucks but its better than nothing so I'm thankful. I'm able to pay my bills & have a drink with friends now and than. I keep saying I'm gonna apply to a few other banks but at the same time I feel like this woman gave me a job when I needed one & I can't just up & leave her. Even though I'm not truly happy.

Decisions, Decisions.

Life Lessons from Madea

Some people are meant to come into your life for a lifetime, some for only a season and you got to know which is which. And you’re always messing up when you mix those seasonal people up with lifetime expectations.

I put everybody that comes into my life in the category of a tree. Some people are like leaves on a tree. When the wind blows, they’re over there… wind blow that way they over here… they’re unstable. When the seasons change they wither and die, they’re gone. That’s alright. Most people are like that, they’re not there to do anything but take from the tree and give shade every now and then. That’s all they can do. But don’t get mad at people like that, that’s who they are. That’s all they were put on this earth to be. A leaf.

Some people are like a branch on that tree. You have to be careful with those branches too, cause they’ll fool you. They’ll make you think they’re a good friend and they’re real strong but the minute you step out there on them, they’ll break and leave you high and dry.

But if you find 2 or 3 people in your life that’s like the roots at the bottom of that tree you are blessed. Those are the kind of people that aren’t going nowhere. They aren’t worried about being seen, nobody has to know that they know you, they don’t have to know what they’re doing for you but if those roots weren’t there, that tree couldn’t live.

A tree could have a hundred million branches but it only takes a few roots down at the bottom to make sure that tree gets everything it needs. When you get some roots, hold on to them but the rest of it… just let it go. Let folks go
